Located along the picturesque shoreline of Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of Michigan’s most beloved natural destinations. Spanning more than 70,000 acres across Leelanau and Benzie counties, the park features a stunning mix of towering sand dunes, crystal-clear lakes, dense forests, and miles of protected shoreline.
The park’s most iconic feature is its massive coastal dunes, which rise up to 450 feet above Lake Michigan and offer breathtaking views of the water and surrounding countryside. Visitors of all ages enjoy climbing the popular Dune Climb, while the scenic Pierce Stocking Drive offers multiple overlooks perfect for photos, sightseeing and some of the world’s most amazing sunsets.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find over 100 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes through forested terrain and along dramatic bluffs. The Empire Bluff Trail is a visitor favorite, offering a relatively short hike with panoramic lake views. When winter hits many of these trails are available for snowshoeing, cross country skiing or fat-tire biking. Cyclists also love to explore the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, a paved multi-use path that winds through much of the park and connects nearby towns.
