The Leelanau Conservancy

Founded in 1988, the Leelanau Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the land, water, and scenic beauty of the Leelanau Peninsula for generations to come. Over the past three decades, the Conservancy has permanently protected thousands of acres of forests, farms, wetlands, and shoreline, ensuring that the peninsula’s distinctive landscapes remain intact for wildlife habitat, clean water, and public enjoyment.

The Conservancy’s work is focused on conserving the land, water and scenic character of Leelanau County. Through partnerships with landowners, they secure conservation easements—agreements that preserve the ecological and agricultural value of private property while allowing owners to continue using the land. They also purchase land outright for preservation, creating natural areas and preserves that are open to the public year-round.

Today, the Leelanau Conservancy manages more than two dozen natural areas and preserves, offering a plethora of activity options through diverse environments. Visitors can hike to the Lake Michigan overlook at Clay Cliffs Natural Area, ride the flow-style mountain bike trails at Palmer Woods Forest Reserve, or kayak the beautiful Kehl Lake Natural Area.

Visitors can go birding, boating, hiking or snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing or hunting, and biking – even in the snow. Just ensure your desired activity is allowed in the area you’re visiting. In addition to wildlands, the Conservancy plays a vital role in safeguarding the peninsula’s water resources. By protecting wetlands, streams, and shoreline along Lake Michigan and inland lakes, the organization helps maintain water quality for both people and wildlife.

They also work with local farmers to preserve farmland and encourage sustainable practices, ensuring that the region’s agricultural heritage remains a vibrant part of the landscape.

Community involvement is at the heart of the Conservancy’s success. Volunteers help with trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and educational events, while donors and members provide essential funding for land acquisitions and stewardship projects. Seasonal programs and guided hikes give residents and visitors a chance to learn about conservation efforts firsthand and to explore protected areas with knowledgeable staff.

For those who love the Leelanau Peninsula’s unspoiled beauty, the work of the Leelanau Conservancy ensures that its forests, beaches, farms, and waters will remain a source of wonder for years to come. Whether you’re hiking a scenic trail, supporting local conservation, or simply taking in the view from a protected bluff, you’re experiencing the lasting impact of this dedicated organization.
